Coaches & Managers

Required Certification & Training

All coaches (head and assistants) are required to complete the following.

Requirements for managers or treasurers are also noted below.

Step 1. USA Hockey Number. Registration with USA hockey is required every season and you must have a valid USA Hockey number before you are added to a USA hockey roster. New registrations start on April 1. Link here: https://membership.usahockey.com.

Step 2. Background Screen. A background screen is required every two seasons (not calendar years) and must be completed. Link here: https://www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen. The cost of the screening must be initially paid by the individual and CCYHA will reimburse. Please send your receipt to ccyharossman@gmail.com for reimbursement.  Reimbursement will occur in batches towards the end of the season.

Starting on April 1, 2020, USA Hockey has a new national background screening program. For members who were last screened through their Affiliate after April 1, 2019, for the 2019-20 season, their screens will be valid for the 2020-21 season, and will not need to be screened under the new system until prior to the 2021-22 season. If a member’s most recent screen is from prior to April 1, 2019, the member, if in a position that requires a background screen, will need to be screened under the new system in order to participate in the upcoming 2020-21 season. All new screens submitted through the new NCSI national screening program after April 1, 2020, will be valid for two seasons. For example, a screen submitted and approved on April 15, 2020, will be valid through the end of the 2021-22 season, which is August 31, 2022.

Step 3. SafeSport Training. SafeSport is required every season. Link here: https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining. Click ‘Register for SafeSport Training’. There are three parts: Mandatory Reporting: Understanding Your Responsibilities; Sexual Misconduct Awareness Education; Emotional and Physical Misconduct. Save your certificate upon completion. Do not submit to CCYHA unless requested.

Step 4. Age Specific Modules (ASM). Coaches must complete the age specific module for the age group (8U, 10U, 12U, 14U and/or 16U) you will be coaching. Link here: https://www.usahockey.com/agespecificmodules. If you are coaching more than one age group, you will need to complete the ASM for each age group. For 2020-21, 8 and under are the 2012-2015 birth years; 10 and under are the 2010 and 2011 birth years; 12 and under are the 2008 and 2009 birth years; 14 and under are the 2006 and 2007 birth years. Once you have completed an ASM you will not need to complete again. Save your certificate upon completion. Do not submit to CCYHA unless requested.

Step 5. Coaching Education Program (CEP). Coaches must complete a USA hockey coaching clinic. On June 4, 2020 USA Hockey announced that it will conduct its Level 1-4 coaching certification clinics virtually until it is deemed safe to host large group gatherings.

If coaches are unable to attend a virtual coaching clinic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new temporary card is being introduced as a flexible option for coaches to maintain their certification. Step 6. Concussion Awareness Training. Coaches must complete concussion awareness training through NFHS; please do not enroll in similar courses. Link here: https://nfhslearn.com. Please register and complete the ‘Concussion in Sports’ course. If you took the course in April 2018 or later, be prepared to upload your certificate in Step 8. If you do not have a copy from a previous course – see frequently asked questions. You will need to re-new the training if you took the course in April 2018 or earlier. Save your certificate and be prepared to upload in Step 8.

Step 7. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness or Lindsay’s Law. Coaches must review SCA awareness information from the State of Ohio. Ohio law, Revised Code 3707.58, states that coaches of an athletic activity organized by a youth sports organization shall complete, on an annual basis, the sudden cardiac arrest training course approved by the department of health. Link here: https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/Lindsays-Law/Lindsays-Law. Coaches must review the Ohio Department of Health's video and SCA Information for the Coach. When complete, acknowledge the date of completion in Step 8.

Step 8. Register with CCYHA. All coaches, managers, and other volunteers must be registered with CCYHA. All coaches must complete ALL steps and register before participating in any team activities (both on and off the ice)! You must complete all steps above, before registering with CCYHA. Link will be provided after teams are named.
